Problem scanning some tracks albums

I'm currently running 7.7.4 downloaded this morning on a box running xubuntu 13.10

Downloaded and tagged some new music, modified some tags, put it in my music dir, some of it didn't show up on rescan. Looked at the dirs that didn't scan, they didn't have the same permissions as the others (permissions seemed fiddly at some point with some version of the server, so I've just gotten in the habit of 777'ing everything in my music dir). Did a chmod -R 777 on all of them. Still didn't show up.

Tried uninstalling 7.7.3 and installing 7.7.4, rescanning, and they still didn't show up. '

Tried resetting the music dir to a new dir containing only the new music, everything showed up.

The situation was something like this:

set /home/totoro/masaaki_suzuki

as the home dir.

Everything shows up

the main music dir is /media/big/music

cd to

/home/totoro/masaaki_suzuki

do rsync -av * /media/big/music/masaaki_suzuki

(there were already directories for other albums in there)

Check to see that permissions are identical on all folders (recursively checking contents): everything looks good.

Go to the web gui and do a clear library and rescan everything.

Still doesn't work right: it almost looks as if there is an earlier bad state stored somewhere.

Where does the current vanilla install store its past state? Are there files, other programs that I can blow away to check this? Other ideas for debugging this?

Thanks for any help.
